Puppy Starter Box

Welcome to your Puppy Starter Box inspiration page.

This box has been put together to help your puppy get started on enrichment with some basic toys. These toys are easy to use and help build your pup’s skills and coordination without frustration.

These items can be used both at home or prepared and taken with you to puppy classes.

The treats we choose are also long lasting chews that may be useful at puppy class or when you need some downtime at home.

Puppies explore the world with their mouths and then throw in teething and it’s no wonder they chew everything. Our goal is to get you started on some alternate activities to keep them busy and give them appropriate things to chew instead of your shoes!

We love these box and hope you do too. Our business is built around our customers so we would love to hear back from you, positive, negative or just suggestions - please use the below link to complete a feedback form.

Can Toy

This mighty little toy is a must have for every dog owner. Learning to use this tool is the first step, then keeping them interested and appropriately challenged is the next step.

The first step is to find your dog’s favourite smear-able treats.

You could offer a tasting plate using a chopping board or plate and have little smears of treats to choose from and see which ones get the best response.

Try little dollops of Ziwi Peak wet food, peanut butter- (xylitol free), vegemite, cream cheese, natural yoghurt, coconut oil, fish/ham paste or honey. Once you know your favourites smear a little on the outside and a little on the inside to get your dog’s interest. Once they are getting the hang of the toy and you are starting to pack it you can use your smear-able treat to line the toy before you stuff it.

Remember to increase the level of difficulty slowly giving your dog time to build their skills- Can Toys can be tricky little toys to pin down and each dog will develop their own style of using them.

Your imagination will keep your dog keen for this toy and we are keen to hear your dog’s favourite combinations so hit us up on our socials and share with us!

Suction Fish Bath Buddy

Licking is a nice calm and soothing behaviour for dogs and helps to release all the happy chemicals in the brain.

Your Fish can be used to create positive associations with things like vet checks, brushing, grooming, nail trims, checking over for ticks or even just routine ear checks. Giving them something easy and yummy to do while you do this just makes sense doesn’t it!

When pairing this with handling keep your sessions short - 30sec and build on it slowly especially if your pup will need regular grooms). If your puppy only tolerates 10 seconds before disengaging with the toy then stop at 8 seconds next time and work from there.

The goal is to have your pup happy to be handled. Run your fingers lightly down each leg, tail, ears and belly while they enjoy their toy. Then let them enjoy the rest of their toy without handling.

This is a great tool to take with you to the hydrobath, vets or groomers.

Or just for fun!!

We look forward to hearing where you have found this toy most useful. Tag us on your socials @crazycritterztoybox to inspire others too!

Tug Toy

This is a great toy for growing teeth as it is soft and stretchy and has lots of give.

This is great to have on hand to use as a distraction when puppy starts to mouth you or your shoes or clothes. Offer the toy instead and teach your pup that this is the toy we play tug with not our shoelaces or clothes. Bear in mind your puppy is teething so keep tug games light hearted and gentle (if possible).

Offer a treat beside your pup and say “give” and swap out the tug toy for a treat when you want to end the game.

Tug has always been Phatso’s favourite games and while we have a variety of tug toys this is still one of his favourites!

Scream Puzzle Toy

You will have received either the Bull or Duck - we LOVE these little guys!

This durable yet flexible toy is a great toy to add food amd smearable to.

Try smearing things like cream cheese, peanut butter, honey, vegemite or natural yoghurt just to name a few to get your puppy licking.

You could build up to smooshing food into it like Banana (Phatso’s fave) or Ziwi wet food or last night’s leftover veggies. Get creative and see what your puppy likes! Once they get really good at it try partially freezing and see how they like it.

As with all new toys, supervise at first to see how they interact with it.
