We have been working with Kingaroy RSPCA helping them engage their staff and volunteers in some new enrichment strategies. Kingaroy have a lot of long term dogs in care and wanted some new ideas to help keep them calm and mentally stimulated.
This shelter has the luxury of having a great many yards for the dogs to use so we have been teaching them to search for their treats. Engaging their sense of smell and using a skill dogs already have. This switches on their SEEKING system which science has proven to have a great many benefits both physically and emotionally. This is particularly important for animals in care in shelters long term.
The staff and vollies have been finding this a fun and easy way to engage with the dogs and help calm and entertain them.
Our Goal: 1 Large Twist and Treats with a pack of High value treats to match the number of yards.
Result: Wow what an amazing result with people gifting from both locally and afar. We managed to not only reaching their goal of 15 packs - one for each yard, we smashed it totalling 23 packs!!
Not only did we get These wonderful packs out to the animals, we also received a lot of feedback and photos of all the new enrichment strategies the staff and vollies are using now. We are seeing some really creative stuff which is so much fun for both staff and volunteers and the ANIMALS!
My favourite was the sandpit filled with soccer balls and treats! Well done guys and gals you are doing an incredible job!
